The Garden Grove Fire Department nominated Harry for his outstanding work in their "CERT" program (Community Emergency Response Team) which was established nationwide after 9/11. He was in the very first graduating class. The Fire Dept., Police Dept. & Paramedics conduct training programs that include Disaster Preparedness, Radio Communications and light Search & Rescue. Those are just a few of the many subjects taught & continually practiced. CERT personnel are registered California Disaster Service Workers. Harry serves on the steering committee; as a board member; new member recruiter (105 so far) and helps maintain over 130 emergency medical/safety back packs. Harry spent 31 yrs. working for Rockwell Space Division (now Boeing) as a project coordinator for NASA's APPOLLO program. He also worked on all five space shuttles and the Minute Man rockets. It was at Rockwell that he met his lovely wife of 21 years, Jureen. They enjoy four children, 13 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Their Garden Grove home is graced with Harry's wood working (he built his own workshop) and topiary trimming. Harry's enthusiasm and sincere dedication is apparent to all that know him. He is truly an outstanding citizen with the spirit of "Volunteerism" flowing through his veins. Is it any wonder that the Garden Grove Fire Department proudly nominated him? Do you see that busy, attractive lady with the bright smile and ready hug? Let me introduce you to our 2007 Queen, Gail Eadens. She has been a Center participant and volunteer since 1992. Practically a native Californian, Gail came from Merwin, Ohio when she was 8 yrs old. Living in San Diego during WWII she worked at Corvair Aircraft as a "Rosie the Riveter" assembling B-24's and volunteered with the USO. After the war San Pedro (where she joined the "Women of the Moose" in 1948), and then Garden Grove became her home. She's been a Garden Grove resident since 1954. Gail was widowed 16 yrs. ago but she has lots of family. One daughter & two sons gave her 10 grandchildren & 20 great grandchildren. Tending her garden, sewing and traveling are some of her interests with ocean cruising being high on the list. At the Senior Center Gail began volunteering almost from the day she joined. She has worked in the kitchen serving the noon meals; organizes bake sales; the huge yearly rummage sale, raffles and the ever popular (and very important) twice a week bingo games. Besides her dedication to H. Louis Lake Center, Gail has given many, many hours to Heritage House (for abused women); several nursing homes in Garden Grove; the VA Hospital and has brought clothing to orphanages in Mexico. She is a willing provider of transportation for those seniors who can no longer drive. Gail radiates warmth and affection and a spirit of generosity that endears her to everyone. It makes no difference if she is here to volunteer of just to "play", all of us are glad she found H. Louis Lake Senior Center so long ago and has continued her participation.
(Note: The 2008 Senior King and Queen are chosen just prior to the Garden Grove Strawberry Festival and their photos and profiles are posted on the website the following year.) For information contact: H. Lois Lake Senior Center at 714-741-5243
